In his shocking memoir, Lamar Odom admitted to banging over 2,000 women, and made that brag a humblebrag by blaming it on "sex addiction."
Now, Lamar is making a major change in his life in order to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
He’s quitting porn, cold turkey.
Lamar Odom tells TMZ Sports that he’s making a big change in his life.
He’s giving up watching porn.
At LAX, Lamar explained his decision, saying: "I’m trying to be better."
He wants to be healthier and have a healthier lifestyle, and apparently he believes that cutting out porn is part of that.
Lamar says that it’s been about a month since he last enjoyed seeing folks bang it out on a screen.
We think that we can guess — sort of — why Lamar might feel like he needs to make this change.
In July, Lamar was ejected from the Big3 on the grounds that he was "out of shape."
Cutting out porn isn’t especially likely to impact that one way or the other.
He is, however, cutting out sugar at the same time, which could definitely have an effect upon his health.
Many suspect that a certain someone in his life has talked Lamar into making these changes.
Lamar is dating Sabrina Parr.
In addition to being a strikingly beautiful woman, Sabrina is also a fitness guru.
Sometimes, the key to making a lifestyle adjustment is to have the support and encouragement of those around you.
Having a fitness-dedicated girlfriend sounds like a great way to keep yourself on the path that you’ve set.
In Lamar’s case, that means getting fit again and avoiding sugar.
And, at the risk of being a little crass, said girlfriend might also make it a little easier to pass on porn.
Is giving up porn actually going to make Lamar healthier?
First, we shouldn’t confuse what he said with giving up sex or masturbation. He just said that he’s cutting out porn.
Orgasms are incredibly good for the body, and so is sex. Cutting out either would not be doing him any favors.
However, sometimes people develop an unhealthy fixation with porn in general or specific types of fetish porn.
A habit like that can be expensive. It can also deprive someone of time and energy they’d devote to other aspects of their life.
It may very well be that Lamar had a genuine problem with porn and needed to go cold turkey. It happens.
"Sex addiction" has yet to be confirmed as an actual thing by the medical establishment.
Though people go to rehab for it and certainly talk about it while apologizing for humiliating their wives, it’s nowhere to be found in the DSM-5.
There is a school of thought that says that certain compulsive habits, like a fixation on food or sex, deserve a different label than "addiction."
After all, going "cold turkey" on food means dying. Eating and sex are both natural human drives. Alcohol and opioids are not.
Regardless of terminology, someone compulsively having sex or being fixated upon sex can certainly interfere in their lives.
Lamar Odom has had a number of issues, including a major health crisis a few years ago in which many feared he might die.
Whatever you may think of his decision to quit porn, it’s wonderful that he is making a real effort to change his life for the better.
We absolutely hope that it works out for him.
Health — of both mind and body — matters a great deal.
