Over the past 12 months, Ariana Grande has become arguably the biggest pop star on the planet.
So you might think the singer would be sad to see this year come to an end, considering all the professional success she enjoyed throughout 2018.
But you’d be very, very, very wrong.
Early Monday morning, a day before the calendar flips to 2019, Grande shared a tribute to ex-boyfriend Mac Miller.
As most readers likely know by now, he’s also late ex-boyfriend Mac Miller because the rapper tragically died of an overdose in September.
In response to the awful development, Grande posted a beautiful black and white photo of Miller, choosing to let the image speak for itself.
And that’s exactly what Ariana did again today, sharing the following snapshot of Miller’s hands on a keyboard via her Instagram Story, prior to deleting the photo for unknown reasons.
But the loss of Miller and the subsequent public/ugly breakup with Pete Davidson have marred the past year for Grande, all artistic accomplishments aside.
This likely explains why she shared a different post on Instagram today and didn’t merely say goodbye to 2018…
… she said good riddance.
"farewell 2018, you f-ck. i hope this new year brings you all much laughter, clarity and healing," Grande penned as a caption to the first picture we posted above.
She added:
"be gentle with yourselves and each other. if we made it thru this last year, we’ll for sure make it thru this one. thank you for everything."
Grande really has been through more in the past several months than most young women her age go through in a lifetime.
Along with Miller’s death and her vicious split from Davidson – who has since threatened to kill himself – let’s not forget about that horrific Manchester bombing in May of 2017.
About a year and a half ago, a terrorist set off an explosive at one of Grande’s concerts, killing over 20 people in the process.
Ariana was not injured and she didn’t lose anyone close to her in the attack — but, as you can imagine, it also took quite the emotional toll on the artist.
We really can’t imagine what Grande went through at that time and in the days/weeks/months after.
We’ll end with Miller, though.
While Grande’s tributes to Miller have mostly been photographs or brief videos, she honored him and others in her recent hit song “Thank U, Next” – calling him “an angel” – and also posted an emotional note to him in September.
This is whay it read:
i adored you from the day i met you when i was nineteen and i always will.
i can’t believe you aren’t here anymore. i really can’t wrap my head around it. we talked about this. so many times. i’m so mad, i’m so sad i don’t know what to do.
you were my dearest friend. for so long. above anything else. i’m so sorry i couldn’t fix or take your pain away. i really wanted to. the kindest, sweetest soul with demons he never deserved.
i hope you’re okay now. rest.
